COSMOS/M Basic System

Adopted by hundreds of engineering departments since its introduction in 1985, COSMOS/M gives engineers the ultimate testing ground for their ideas. It closes the loop between inspiration and the final design, and also helps users shorten the design cycle and save engineering resources!

The COSMOS/M basic system serves as a building block that offers comprehensive linear static and dynamic analyses capabilities. The system contains a state-of-the-art, integrated pre- and post- processor that can be augmented with special analysis features to meet your exact needs.

You only need to learn one program to use COSMOS/M, thanks to the GEOSTAR graphic interface. It features a descriptive command language, on-line help, pull-down menus and command icons to get you started quickly. Extensive command menus give you added flexibility in modeling and analyzing your design.

Creating the Model

You can create a full range of geometric entities including, points, lines, curves, circles, surfaces, volumes, regions, polyhedra and parts with the 3D interface. Complex shapes can be generated by sweeping, dragging, or gliding 2D profiles. You can also use existing geometry for analysis. CAD data can be imported by IGES, DXF or STL files.

3D Automatic Meshing

Because of enhancements in the automatic mesher, you can mesh complex models and control the mesh density along arbitrary cutouts and intersections with one button. You may also automatically refine the mesh in critical areas. This drastically reduces the time and expertise needed.

Adaptive Static Analysis

COSMOS/M performs adaptive analysis of linear static problems that converge to solutions with specified tolerances. You can consider both the adaptive H (which refines elements in critical stress areas) or the adaptive P-method (which selectively increases the element polynomial order at critical areas).

Other Basic Analyses

The basic system also determines natural frequencies, mode shapes & critical buckling loads that require consideration during the design process.

Displaying Results

COSMOS/M offers several new display techniques in addition to standard contour and vector plots. Isoplane plots show planes or surfaces of constant value. Section plots show distribution of results over cut planes for viewing internal or hard to see areas. Expanded real time animation includes animating all time-dependent values as well as simulating mode shapes, path variation graphs and deformation patterns.
